Looking at How the Children are Affected

For my second move, I wanted to look deeper into how children are affected when they are taken away from their parents. From personal experiences, I have not necessarily seen how foster children are affected because of how young they were. When I researched this area however, I found many ways that they are affected.

"Some ways a child is affected by foster care include attachment issues, mental-health issues, developmental delays, and their change in behvior after seeing or visiting their biological mother and/or father."

- Suzanne Robin

During the process in learning about this particular area, I found that children get very angry, sad, and have many trust issues. For example, when my adopted brother Andrew first came to live with my family and I, he had a very hard time sleeping and would rarely talk to us. Over time, Andrew became more comfortable, but it made me realize that foster children need people in their lives that will stay there.

Many foster children are placed into homes that are not permanent, which causes them to move from home to home until they age out of the system. Because of this, adults who have aged out of the system, have been greatly affected as well. While some children end up making bad decisions when they age out of foster care, some become successful, but it all depends on what type of future the child wants for themselves.
